The water treatment industry is global, and so is VA Tech Wabag Ltd. Services provided by the organization span the whole life cycle, from initial ideation to final decommissioning. For municipal organizations and businesses in the infrastructure industry, such as power steel and oil and gas firms, they provide a variety of EPC and O&M solutions for sewage treatment, processed water treatment, effluents treatment, sludge treatment, desalination, and reuse.

The corporation has a foothold in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East markets. China and Southeast Asia through their headquarters in India, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Algeria, Romania, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Libya, and Macau. They have four main divisions: Municipal, Industrial Water, Operations, and International.

Through ODIs in the form of subsidiaries, joint ventures, and associate businesses, WABAG has extended its international footprint. As of March 31, 2018, the firm operates via 18 subsidiaries, three associates, and one joint venture entity. The firm has research and development facilities in Chennai, India; Vienna, Austria, and Winterthur, Switzerland. On February 17, 1995, VA Tech Wabag Ltd. was founded by Balcke Durr Cooling Towers Ltd. The firm received its certificate of incorporation on March 8, 1995.

Originally, Deutsche Babcock owned Balcke-Durr Aktiengesellschaft, a German firm that specialized in designing and building cooling towers.

Since establishing a water treatment branch in 1996, the firm was formerly known as Black Durr Cooling Towers Ltd but is now known as Black Durr and Wabag Technologies Ltd. Its first EPC contract with Reliance Petroleum, in April 1997, was a water treatment plant. In April 1999, the Austrian company VA Tech purchased the Wabag brand water business from Deutsche Babcock. The company's water and non-water operations were split up in India, and the latter was sold to BDT Ltd. The company's leadership felt the need to reflect this shift in focus by rebranding as VA Tech Wabag Ltd.

Following the de-merger and rebranding, the company's primary activity is the design, supply, building, and installation of water and wastewater treatment facilities, as well as the operation and maintenance of those above.

It wasn't until March of 2000 that the firm obtained its first municipal order from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, marking its official entry into the municipal sector. Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance awarded them the ISO 9001:2000 Certification in September of 2000. The company's operations and maintenance division opened in July 2002, with the first O&M contract coming in from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board placed an order with them in September 2002 for Rs 7,000,000,000.

I-Ven Water Treatment Technologies Ltd. bought a controlling interest in the firm in September 2005. I-Ven Water Treatment Technologies Ltd was merged with the firm in April 2006 under the terms of a merger plan. Rajiv Mittal, Amit Sengupta, Shiv Narayan Saraf, S.
