Director and promoter of Ultra Marine & Pigments, N S Iyengar founded Thirumalai Chemicals (TCL) in 1972. It produces and sells phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, tartaric acid, fumaric acid, and maleic acid salts. Manufacturing food acids began in a commercial capacity at TCL in 1992. The company collaborated with Alusuisse Italia of Italy on a technological solution for extracting maleic anhydride from the phthalic anhydride plant's waste gases. In 1994, TCL established a second factory in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, to produce phthalic anhydride, fumaric acid, and malic acid.

The current production capacity of the Ranipet factory is 87,000 MT of Phthalic Anhydride, 10,750 MT of Maleic Anhydride, and 17,000 MT of Food Acids.

The plasticizers, esters, polyester resins, alkyd paints, and blue/green pigments made using TCL's products are all staples in the chemical industry. The production of soft drink powders, fruit concentrates, hard candies, digestive pills, frozen meals, and fresh sterile concentrates relies on fumaric acid. In the 1995–1996 fiscal year, TCL was designated as an Export House. Its primary markets are the nations of the Persian Gulf, East Asia, and Australia. ISO 9002 certification has been granted by BVQI. BVQI awarded the firm ISO 14001 certification in 2000–01, and it is valid for three years.

A subsidiary, TCL Industries (Malaysia), produces phthalic anhydride and fumaric acid at the Karnaman Malaysia facility. The company's performance has been poor for quite some time, but the attempts to improve things in 2000-2001 paid well. It has also invested over Rs.10 Crores in a project to upgrade and modernize its aging PAN facilities in order to produce value-added chemicals. The firm has already invested much in expanding to accommodate this project, and once it is finished, it will have enough worldwide capacity for all of its goods.
