Sanjay Nayak established the company in 2000 with seed money from Gururaj Deshpande. A little later, Kumar Sivarajan (a professor at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and the author of a book on optical fiber) and Arnob Roy also joined the team (an ex-colleague of Nayak). The creation of Intelligent Network technology was the first step for Tejas Network. Depending on the user's needs, these networks might send data between two locations at varying rates of speed. In addition to detecting and correcting disturbances, the network redirected and cleaned the traffic. Ten new clients were brought on board during 2002-2003.

Tejas Networks had valued at Rs 2301 crore when it first went public in June 2017 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) (23,010,000,000).

Centrum Broking analysts Alpesh Thacker and Siddhartha Khemka expect the company to be the first listed participant in India's optical networking equipment industry. Several large investors, including the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, East Bridge Capital, and PremjiInvest (the family investment arm of Wipro Ltd.), placed bets on Tejas Networks before its first public offering. Known as TJ1600S/I, Tejas Network's disaggregated packet-optical switch was the biggest of its kind in 2020.

As a result of the company's declining sales and profitability in the fiscal year ending in 2020, ICRA announced a downgrade in its rating. Falling receipts from the government and the global market were to blame for the revenue shortfall.

Tata Sons' Panatone Finvest Limited made an Rs 1884 crore investment in Tejas Networks on July 29, 2021, purchasing a 43.35 percent ownership in the company in exchange for shares and warrants.

The Economic Times reports that Tejas Networks intends to leverage the support of the Tata group to increase the number of telecommunications products it offers. As of March 2022, Tejas Networks owned 64% of Saankhya Labs, an Indian wireless communication and semiconductor firm.
