On November 20th, 1987, Vishnukant C. Bhutada and his friends founded Shilpa Medicare Limited, then known as Shilpa Antibiotics Limited. Shilpa Medicare Limited (SML) provides a Formulation and Development service for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) in the pharmaceutical industry. In 1987, the company's founders in Raichur, Karnataka, set up shop as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) factory. Production for sale began in November 1989. Shilpa Medicare Limited became a public limited company in November 1993.

The Company has extensive skills in the therapeutic field of cancer, making it one of the top API and formulation makers. It distributes around 30 active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the field of cancer to countries all over the world that need them, including the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, and other growing markets.

Although SML's core competency is in oncology, the company also benefits from selling APIs in other areas. The European market is led by Ambroxol (Mucolytic agent), whereas Tranexamic Acid and Ursodeoxycholic acid serve the Indian market. So far, SML has released over 44 APIs for cancer and other therapeutic areas.

The Company offers 16 injectable dosage forms, 19 oral solid dosage forms, and 13 formulations via Shilpa Therapeutics Private Limited, a fully-owned subsidiary of SML. SML uses cutting-edge technology to provide APIs, formulations, development services, bulk drug intermediates, new drug delivery systems, peptides/biotech products, specialty chemicals, etc., that meet or exceed all applicable international standards and requirements.

Regarding Oncology and Non-Oncology APIs and Intermediates, SML is a top provider. The first commercially available sodium methoxide was produced in 1992 after the business had established the necessary manufacturing facilities. During FY2015, we successfully transferred five items to the factory, and another eight are almost ready for transfer.

In anticipation of rising demand, ten novel compounds have been selected for research and development. Tano Mauritius India FVCI II, an existing member of the Company, was allotted 1764705 equity shares of Rs.2/- apiece at a premium of Rs.423/-each on 15 May 2014 on a preferential basis as part of the Company's mobilization of resources to extend its activities during FY15.

After receiving permission from shareholders at the 28th Annual General Meeting on September 28, 2015, the firm split the face value of each existing equity share (at the time, Rs.2/-) into two equity shares (at the time, Re.1/-), both of which were fully paid as of the Record Date. During the 2015–2016 fiscal year, Shilpa Medicare's subsidiary, Raychem Medicare Pvt. Ltd., finished installing all machinery, hired all essential staff, began trial production in August 2015 after an audit by an external consultant from Italy, and began commercial production in December 2015.

The GMP certificate, license to manufacture drugs, and approval from the pollution control board were all things the subsidiary was able to get before starting up the factory.
