In 1969, P Subramanian, an enterprising engineer, established Shanthi Gears (SGL), a gear manufacturing firm in Coimbatore. At the time, the business was organized as a partnership concern. The partnership business was reorganized as a limited liability company in July 1972, then transitioned into the public market as a public limited company in March 1986. When it opened its doors, Shanthi gears only created gears for textile machines.

The firm receives fifty percent of its revenue from the execution of customized orders, which may be understood as gears built to the customer's specifications. In March of 1992, SGL issued a rights offering to fund the expansion and modernization of its manufacturing facilities partially.

In addition, the business conducted a preferential issuance of 3.4 million equity shares to banks and mutual funds in September of 1994 at a premium of Rs 160 per share. Shanthi Sales, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shanthi Gears, is responsible for all aspects of the company's marketing. As a direct result of the sale of all of the firm's shares during the 2004-2005 fiscal year, Shanthi Sales Ltd. was no longer considered a subsidiary of the parent company.

Shanthi Precision Industries Ltd (SPL) (Formerly Loyal Engineering - takeover by Shanthi group in 1998) and SPL were merged with the company with effect from 1st July 2003 in the exchange ratio of 1:5. These are the group companies that Shanthi gears belong to. Shanthi Clothesline is a woven and knitted garment manufacturing company; Shanthi Constructions is an infrastructure construction company; Shanthi Precision Industries Ltd (SPL) (Formerly Loyal Engineering - In August of 2004, the corporation changed the face value of its equity shares, bringing them down from Rs.10/- to Re.1/- each.

In addition, the corporation has provided a ratio of one bonus equity share for every existing share held by its stockholders.
