RITES Limited was founded in April of 1974 by the Ministry of Railways of India as a Miniratna (Category-I) Schedule 'A' Central Public Sector Enterprise. The Company is a frontrunner in the multidisciplinary engineering and consultancy industry, serving the transportation and infrastructure sectors in India and around the world with individualized, cost-effective, diversified, and all-encompassing concept-to-commissioning services and integrated solutions.

The company's offerings cover transportation and infrastructure. This includes trains, highways, airports, ports, ropeways, urban transit, inland waterways, renewable energy, and so on. Currently operating in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mozambique, Mauritius, and Botswana, it has previously supplied customers in more than 55 countries spanning Asia, Africa, Latin America, South America, and the Middle East.

The Company has the advantage of being linked to the Indian Railways, the world's fourth-longest train network, thanks to its incorporation by the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India (MoR). Since its founding in 1974, it has progressed beyond its original purpose of providing advice and quality assurance services for transport infrastructure.

Customers in India come from all levels of government, from federal to state, from national to municipal, and from the public sector. Among them is the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited, a subsidiary of Indian Railways NTPC.

On April 26, 1974, RITES Limited was formally established as "Rail India Technical and Economic Services Private Limited." On February 17, 1976, the word "Private" was dropped from the Company's official name. The company and Syrian Railways signed a consulting agreement to perform a techno-economic study in 1975–1976.

The firm set up its geotechnical center for both in-field and lab-based research in 1985–1986. The company secured a contract to export diesel locomotives to Nepal Railways in 1994–1995.
