Reliance Capital & Finance Trust Limited, the predecessor to Reliance Capital Limited (RCL), was established in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in 1986. RCL began operating on January 5, 1995. Before finally relocating to Mumbai in Maharashtra in 2006, RCL first transferred its registered office to Jamnagar in Gujarat in 2002. Reliance Capital Ventures Limited and RCL amalgamated in 2006, increasing the number of RCL shareholders from 0.15 million to 1.3 million.

RCL first tapped the capital market in 1990 with a debut public offering, and in the years that followed, it continued to do so through rights issues and public offerings. During its early years, RCL worked in recurring annuity-yielding industries like leasing, bill discounting, and inter-corporate deposits. Later, in 1993, the company expanded its business into project finance consulting services, investment banking, lending against securities, custodial services, and money market operations.
