The RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, the youngest commercial conglomerate in India, includes Philips Carbon Black (PCBL). On March 30, 1960, the business entity known as the Company was formally established as a public limited company. The Company's name has changed from "Phillips Carbon Black Limited" to "PCBL Limited" as of the issuing of a new Certificate of Incorporation on December 29, 2021. Its Carbon Black division is the country's biggest.

Carbon black feedstock (CBFS) and tar oil are used to create carbon black, the primary raw ingredient in automobile tires. PCBL's four factories in Durgapur, West Bengal; Mundra and Palej, Gujarat; and Kochi, Kerala; and their combined annual rated production capacity of 603,000 MT and 76 MW of green electricity make up the company's rated production capacity.

The Company is a massive conglomerate involved in many different industries, including power and natural resources, carbon black retail and fast-moving consumer goods media and entertainment infrastructure, and IT education and sports. PCBL is present in over 30 countries because of its well-oiled supply chain and distribution system.

All of the country's tire manufacturers, retreaters, and other customers are serviced by the company's network of consignment agents, which is part of its efficient distribution system. Carbon black is a relatively new product in India, and PCBL is the country's first company to handle every production stage in addition to marketing and design.

In 1960, PCBL was established with the American firm Phillips Petroleum. Production of PCBL began for the public in December 1962. Columbian Chemical and PCBL worked on technical matters for nearly ten years. In February 1994, PCBL issued equity shares with a premium of Rs 30 per share, for a total of Rs 33.53 cr.

In 1996–97, the firm merged with Carbon and Chemicals India Ltd, effective April 1, 1997. The KPCB demanded the corporation shut down its Cochin facility after an accident caused the emission of black carbon smoke. Because of this unit shutdown, the company's output and exports suffered. There was a three-month pause in manufacturing, but now everything is back to normal.

The corporation has relocated its idle capacity of 10,000 MT from Cochin to Durgapur to keep up with its yearly demand. During the latter quarter of the fiscal year 2014, the Kochi plant was put into operation with the capacity to manufacture 50,000 metric tons per year (MTPA) of carbon black. This brings the overall MTPA capacity of the company to 472,000.

In 2014, the company established a state-of-the-art rubber application laboratory, recast Standard Operating Procedures, improved product characteristics to meet more stringent customer specifications, and increased yield through changes to the reactor design and operating conditions.

The scheme of Amalgamation of Goodluck Dealcom Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Phillips Carbon Black Limited, with Phillips Carbon Black Limited under Sections 230 to 232 of the Companies Act 2013, was approved by the Board of Directors of the Company at meetings held on 5th October 2016 and 18th January 2017, subject to regulatory approvals.
