Incorporated on 14 November 1956 as a Private Limited Company under the house of the Government of India (GOI), NLC India Limited (NLC) changed its name to NLC on 7 March 1986 after becoming public. Currently, the Company is active in the extraction of fossil fuels and the production of thermal electricity through lignite and renewable energy sources. It operates three lignite mines in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, with a combined capacity of 30.60 million TPA, and one open-pit lignite mine in Barsingsar, Rajasthan, with a capacity of 2.1 million TPA. A second feasibility study for the first mine expansion and a study on building a power station with a capacity of 2 x 210 MW were presented to the Indian government in 1986. The Company and Engineers India Ltd signed an agreement with Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation to oversee the development of the Panandhro mine. This included construction supervision, cost monitoring, an inspection of work in progress, and approval of drawings. In 1987, the switching stations/sub-stations and the 400 KV transmission system (400 KV line between Neyveli and Chennai, 400 KV line between Neyveli and Pondicherry) were officially opened to the public. In 1988, ICB of India and the urea plant's original supplier, Technimont Italy, agreed on who would provide the technical feasibility assessment for the plant's redesign. In 1990, four electrostatic precipitators were installed and put into service at thermal power station-I. The second 315 MVA transformers at the Udamalpet sub-station and the 170 Km long Neyveli-Salem second circuit 400 KV line were commissioned in the same year, 1990. In 1993, the fertilizer factory and M/s. PDIL Sindri entered into a contract to construct a high-quality treatment facility. In 1995, the company's Electro Static precipitators were installed in Boiler-4 and Boiler-7A. In 1996, the business was approved to install two 210-megawatt (MW) units at thermal power station-I, and in the same year, the Bucket wheel excavator was made available for revitalization projects. In 1998, a BSES Ltd. subsidiary, Tamil Nadu Industries Captive Power Company Ltd (Ticapco), announced plans to build a 250 MW lignite-based power facility near Srimushnam in the state. The Corporation had acquired a significant ownership position in this project. In 1999, NLC had agreed to sell lignite to ST-CMS, a private power-producing firm in the United States, to construct a 250 mw thermal power plant. The business sold its Power Transmission System to Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd in 2000.

Power Finance Corporation (PFC) promised Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) a loan of Rs 1000 crore in 2001 for the latter's Mine-II and TPS-II expansion projects. In 2002, NLC and the state of Rajasthan signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a lignite-based thermal power station in the Barsinger village of the Bikaner district. In 2003, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to construct a 100 MW thermal power station in Tuticorin. With the help of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd, NLC earned an ISO quality certification in 2004.
