KRBL is a vertically integrated company that produces packaged rice. The business is among the world's top exporters of Basmati rice. There are grading and polishing stations spread out over Punjab, Haryana, Uttaranchal, and Uttar Pradesh, and the company has the highest milling capacity in the world. It is a major exporter of rice, having sent tons to approximately 165 different nations. In 1889, in the neighborhood of Lyallpur in the city of Faisalabad, Pakistan, KRBL was established. There were originally ten cotton spinning mills, two rice mills, 16 commission agencies in 18 cities, and a bank that belonged to KRBL in its original form. After the Partition of India in 1947, KRBL reorganized and moved its activities to New Delhi's Naya Bazar (Lahori Gate).

Measures to increase rise output multiplied throughout the 1970s. After reorganizing its Delhi activities, the corporation focused on rice production. In 1978, KRBL was one of the first companies in the world to begin shipping rice overseas in pre-packaged containers. Having established itself as a significant player in the rice industry, KRBL began exporting rice for the first time in 1985. Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, is home to KRBL's state-of-the-art basmati processing factory, built in 1992 for exports alone.

The firm received its certificate of operation from the Registrar of Companies on March 30th, 1993, thus establishing it as a publicly listed company. KRBL received the Super Star Trading House award in 1996 from the Director General of Foreign Trade, Government of India, recognizing the company's growing export business. KPMG awarded KRBL's Alipur Delhi factory ISO 9002 accreditation in 1998. KRBL's powerful brands, India Gate and Doon, debuted in the domestic market that year. KRBL introduced the idea of contract farming to the Indian states of Uttranchal, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab in 1999. In 2001, KPMG awarded the firm the ISO 9002:1994 accreditation for the GBN facility. KRBL was first publicly traded in 2002 on the National Stock Exchange. KRBL spent $3.6 million in 2003 to purchase a rice processing factory in Dhuri, Punjab. KRBL was the first Indian rice firm to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) that year.

KRBL has been producing excellent food since 2004, when it was awarded the HACCP and SQF certifications. KRBL was designated a Four Star Export House in 2005. The first phase of the Dhuri plant's renovation for processing activities was completed during the year. KRBL raised $12 million via a GDR issuance in 2006, a record for the Indian rice business. The business established a 12.5 MW facility in Dhulia, Maharashtra, to generate wind electricity throughout the year. KRBL earned the British Retail Consortium (BRC) accreditation in 2007.
