On January 30, 1986, J.M. Share and Stock Brokers Private Limited, the forerunner of JM Financial Limited, was founded as a Private Limited Company by the Companies Act 1956. Because its promoter, J. M. Financial & Investment Consultancy Services Private Limited, was designated a Public Limited Company on June 15, 1988, the Company was automatically treated as such.

The business changed its name to JM Financial Limited Public Limited Company on September 15, 2004. Regarding capital market services, JM Financial Limited is the go-to provider for businesses and individuals. The Firm is a holding company that manages equity and debt capital markets, advice on mergers and acquisitions, and runs a corporate finance consulting and private equity fund administration and management business. In addition to its headquarters in Mumbai, the company has branches in 4 other countries, a representative office in another, and 634 retail stores in 185 cities in India.

The Company and Morgan Stanley formed a joint venture in December 1997. The company's goal was to become a "Zero Debt Company," thus, in 2001, it redeemed the last tranche of its 14% Debenture and returned a portion of its unsecured debts to its backers.

In 2006, J.M. Securities Private Limited joined the Company via a merger. In August of the same year (2006), JM Financial announced the formation of a corporate, private equity fund called the JM Financial India Fund, with Old Lane Partners LP of the United States serving as the Fund's main investor and co-sponsor. As of August 2007, the firm has introduced a novel Portfolio Management Scheme based on the Dynamic Portfolio Insurance (DPI) technique to provide complete protection of investment capital and the opportunity for further growth in that investment.

JM Financial purchased JM Financial ASK Securities Private Limited in March 2008. In September 2008, the company established a full-fledged branch in Vizag, the Port City of Andhra Pradesh. A division of FirstRand Limited (FirstRand), Rand Merchant Bank (RMB), and JM Financial Consultants Private Limited entered into strategic cooperation on June 3, 2010, to provide merger and acquisition (M&A) advisory services to Indian and African corporates for their activities in the Indo-Africa corridor. Mr. Vikram Shankar Pandit, a Non-Resident Indian, exercised his entitlement as a warrant holder on 11 December 2014. As a result, the JM Financial Ltd Allotment Committee issued him a total of 1.16 crore equity shares with a face value of Rs 1 apiece.

JM Financial Ltd announced on August 17, 2015, that its Wholly Owned Subsidiary (WOS), JM Financial Institutional Securities Limited, had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Seabury Corporate Finance LLC, a subsidiary of Seabury Group LLC, for strategic cooperation to provide Investment Banking advisory services to Indian corporates for their activities in the Aviation Aerospace and Defense business.

According to the terms of the agreement, JM Financial and Seabury will work together to serve the needs of their respective customers in the areas of investment banking advisory services and the identification of appropriate strategic alliances.
