IDFC Limited was established in 1997 to provide financial support for expanding private sector infrastructure. The company's primary areas of interest include project financing and capital mobilization. The company's primary goal was to help businesses maximize their investment returns by providing financial intermediation for projects and services, introducing novel products to the infrastructure value chain, and performing asset maintenance on existing projects. The company is widely regarded as a leading authority in infrastructure financing due to its ability to draw on various international and domestic funding sources. In 2005, Dr. Rajiv Lall joined the firm, and since then, he has overseen the company's growth into new areas, including Asset Management, Institutional Broking, and an Infrastructure Debt Fund.

After winding down their previous operations, NBFCs shifted their focus to providing capital to underserved sectors of the economy, including micro and small-scale enterprises that lack access to traditional banking services. Within a year, he developed a proof of concept for this form of financing (Rs 12,000 to Rs 30,000, or around $300 to $500). He submitted it to numerous global private equity companies for a Leveraged Management Buyout. A new corporation with new shareholders, a new board, new business lines, and an injection of new money of Rs. One hundred crores, Capital First, was created by him in 2012 after he completed India's biggest Leveraged Management Buyout.

Retail Assets under Management for the Company rose from 94 crores ($14m) on March 31, 2010, to 29,625 crores ($4.3 b, Sep 2018). Utilizing cutting-edge technological frameworks, the firm funded seven million clients at a total value of Rs. 60,000 crores ($8.5b). With a 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 56%, the firm went from a loss of Rs. 30 crores ($4.7 m) in FY09 to a profit of Rs. 327 crores ($4.7 m) in FY18. This asset class had a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 29% over five years. From a negative return on investment in 2010, it has increased progressively to a 15% ROE in 2018. Following the MBO in March 2012, the company's market valuation skyrocketed to over Rs. 8,282 billion by January 2018, when the merger was announced.
