As one of India's most prestigious automakers, Hindustan Motors Ltd, the corporation is the market leader in India's automobile sector, and its goods consistently get high marks from satisfied buyers. Passenger cars, RTVs, and Bedford trucks, among other vehicles, are manufactured by the company. Mitsubishi also produces luxury midsize automobiles, including the Lancer, Lancer Select, and Lancer Cedia.

Working with Mitsubishi Motors in Japan, they introduced the Mitsubishi Pajero, a sport utility vehicle, to the Indian market. Hindustan Motors Ltd. was founded at Port Okha, Gujarat, in 1942 as a modest passenger automobile production facility. In 1948, the firm relocated to Uttarpara, West Bengal, where it built a plant to produce automobiles and trucks. In 1971, it opened a second plant in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, to make earth-moving machineries such as dump trucks, front-end loaders, and crawler tractors. The company's commercial vehicle business, which produces Heavy Commercial Vehicles, was started in 1986 in Vadodara, Gujarat, and its Power Products Division, which has heavy-duty transmission needed for earth-moving equipment, got started in 1985.

Production of gasoline engines and gearboxes at the Pithampur facility in Madhya Pradesh began that year thanks to the partnership between the firm and Japan's Isuzu Motor Company. The Earthmoving Equipment Division, the Power Plant Division, and the Uttarpara Plant were all refurbished and enlarged in 1996. The manufacture of the Road Trusted Vehicle started in 1997, while the development of the Mitsubishi Lancer car began in 1998.

In 1999–2000, the firm signed a deal to sell on-highway transmissions with GM's Allison Transmission Division in the United States. On February 9, 2001, the company's Earthmoving Equipment Division was sold to Caterpillar India Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc. in the United States. The business collaborated with Mitsubishi Motors in Japan to introduce the Mitsubishi Pajero to the Indian market in 2001–02. They also made a deal with Ford India Ltd to ship engines and transmissions made at Pithampur to Ford India. At the tail end of the 2002–03 fiscal year, the firm established Remote Services Division in Chennai as a Software Technology Park. Also, in 2003–2004, the firm established a wholly-owned subsidiary in the United States to serve as a base for marketing and other services related to the Remote Services Division's operations.

The Ambassador's Grand and the Avigo models debuted in the same year, 2003–2004. They also introduced a new Lancer model called the Lancer Invex, which has an automated gearbox and a 1.8-litre gasoline engine. Power Products Division's transmission component exports to Allison Transmission Division of General Motors USA totalled four crore rupees last year. In 2004–2005, HM Actis and the C K Birla Group transferred ownership of their Power Unit Plant in Pithampur and their Power Products Division in Hosur to a company called AVTEC.
