A subsidiary of the Global Group, GTL Limited began operations on December 23, 1987, as GTL Tele-Systems Pvt. Ltd. GTL is an industry-leading Network Services provider with certifications in ISO 14001:2004 and ISO 9001:2000. The company's solutions span the wireless communications spectrum, from 2G networks to 3G networks to 4G networks to WiMAX to IPTV. It has executed projects in more than 35 countries.

Network deployment, operation, and maintenance are part of the package—control of utilities and professional assistance in establishing and maintaining infrastructure. During 1988–1989, the company launched single-line push-button phones, a new customer service branch called GTL Care, and the distribution of Apple computers and desktop publishing systems. GTL mapped out its distribution network throughout the country in 1990 and opened three offices that year. In 1991, the same year GTL launched its Networking and Engineering Services branch, the company formed its first significant international partnership with Murata Japan. In 1992.

In 1993, the firm began turnkey execution of projects for Voice and Data Networks and projects on wireless networks. It also adds an interactive Response system to its Instant Voice Access System Message Switching. GTL acquires a license from the Department of Technology to provide data-related services and forms the subsidiary GTL Electronic Commerce Services Ltd. (GECS) to do so. In 1994, GTL expanded its network offerings to include Fiber Optics and V-SAT systems for carrying data and voice calls. With a budget of more than Rs. One hundred crores, the Company, commissioned the largest private nationwide data network in India in 1995, covering nine cities. At the same time, the Company's Services network grew to 26 locations across India. In 1996, GTL was the first Indian telecom/software company to successfully issue SFr 60 million (approximately US $ 50 million) in foreign currency convertible bonds in the Swiss financial market. The company also launched data network services like Enhanced Fax Electronic Messaging and Electronic Commerce via EDI technology (GECS). In 1997, the firm formed a JV with Broadsystem Multimedia of Australia to launch a call-centre business in India. In 1998, GTL revised its business strategy, shifting its focus to services while initiating the phased sale of several of its product lines. In 1999, the firm established an Oracle Competence centre and a Nortel CISCO Lab.

In 2000, GTL reorganized its business structure, transitioning away from its Subscriber End Terminal Division and focusing instead on developing and releasing new business-to-business (B2B) service applications, such as the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software GTL E-enterprise, targeted at small and medium-sized businesses.

In 2001, GTL and GECS amalgamated. That same year, GTL purchased two software companies—Fine Infotech Limited (FIL) and Thermax Systems & Software Limited (TSSL)—and formed a 51% subsidiary, GTL E-Secure Ltd., which specializes in providing security solutions to businesses. Forbes Magazine has named GTL one of the Best 200 Small Companies in America. It wasn't until 2001 that GTL Limited became the official company name. In 2002, GTL expanded its worldwide footprint by opening 11 new offices and increasing its workforce to over 100. As of the same year, NASSCOM rated GTL's Call Centre business third in the ITES sector. GTL was also evaluated at SEI-CMM Level 4 for Enterprise Solutions - Software Development. In 2003, GTL was honoured with India's highest quality award, the Golden Peacock.

Six Sigma Initiatives had undertaken projects for all 16 of the company's most essential processes. Nortel Networks named the company a 2005 N Power Partner of the Year.
