The worldwide CRISIL Ltd. provides rating research, risk and policy advising services, and other analytic products and services. This organization is the market leader among rating firms in India. They are also the primary supplier of high-end research to the world's central banks and leading organizations. S&P Global Inc., a leading supplier of transparent and unbiased ratings benchmarks analytics and data to global capital and commodities markets, primarily owns CRISIL. Ratings and Research are CRISIL's two main business pillars. Training in the credit rating sector, credit analysis services, grading services, and worldwide analytical services are all a part of the rating service. Equity research industry studies, individualized research projects, data service subscriptions, and evaluations of initial public offerings are part of the research division's service offering. It uses a network of seven global labs to conduct its investigations.

In 1987, the Credit Rating Information Services of India Ltd. (CRISIL) was established. Nationalized, foreign, and private-sector banks, all industry heavyweights, supported the company's formation. They joined forces with the New York-based credit rating agency Standard & Poor's in the 1995–1996 fiscal year. They have developed a tie-up with International Information Vendors to distribute CRISIL Ratings. The business introduced CRISIL 500 equity index during the year. There were no ratings for mutual funds, bank loans, or public financing until 1996–97 when the corporation first offered them. Next year, they released ratings for municipal bonds in addition to ratings for insurance firms' financial stability.

The corporation with National Stock Exchange established a joint venture company under the name IISL for conducting index operations and associated activities. During the same period, they also debuted the Crisil MNC Index and the Crisil Indian Business Groups Index. During 1999-2000, the firm purchased the Information Products and Research Services (India) Pvt Ltd business along with their name INFAC. The following year, they debuted a program to rate the quality of domestic mutual funds. In addition, they released the Crisil-Naredco rating program for the building industry. Crisil MarketWire is a real-time financial news service introduced by the business in 2001–02. Investment and Risk Management Services is a separate business founded in 2002–03 to provide analysis services to the media industry. Credit Rating Information Services of India Ltd changed its name to Crisil Ltd in the 2003–2004 fiscal year. They bought Gas Strategies Group Ltd, a London-based firm involved in consultancy information and training/ conferences.

In addition, they made a financial investment in the world's first regional credit rating firm, Caribbean Information & Credit Rating Services Ltd.

In 2004-2005, the firm purchased the Irevna group of firms. With effect from April 01, 2007, the company's Advisory Business was sold to Crisil MarketWire Ltd. On April 1, 2007, Crisil Research & Information Services Ltd., Global Data Services of India Ltd., and Irevna Research Services Ltd. combined with the corporation to establish the current entity. The firm and Equifax Inc. in the United States, together with Tata Capital Ltd., came to an initial agreement in February 2008 to develop a Credit Information Company in India. They also suggested establishing a subsidiary in Poland and Dubai via its UK-based wholly-owned company, Irevana Ltd UK. In 2008, CRISIL Infrastructure Advisory was restructured by splitting out its business development and service delivery departments.

They accomplished a considerable number of overseas engagements. The business disposed of 90% of its interest in its UK subsidiary Gas Strategies Group Ltd (GSG), to the GSG management team. The corporation currently owns 10% of the company's stock. In 2009, the business published India's Top 50 Microfinance Institutions, the first publication to profile the country's top microfinance institutions.
