Manufacturing and selling lubricating oil additives are the main focus of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL), which also engages in the refining of crude oil to create other petroleum products. Most of CPCL's gasoline products are marketed by Indian Oil Corporation Limited, the parent firm. On November 18, 1965, the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) was established. AMOCO and the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) joined forces with the Government of India (GOI) to create the joint venture formerly known as Madras Refineries Limited (MRL). A 10.5 Mtpa may be refined at CPCL's two refineries (MMTPA).

One of the most complicated refineries in India, the Manali Refinery produces Fuel Lube Wax and Petrochemical feedstocks with a capacity of 9.5 MMTPA. The Nagapattinam refinery, with a total of 1 MMTPA, is CPCL's second facility in the Cauvery Basin. LPG Motor Spirit, Superior Kerosene, Aviation Turbine Fuel, High-Speed Diesel, and other items are the company's mainstays. Naphtha and Bitumen Lubricant Base Materials Materials are used in producing plastics, rubber, and other petrochemicals, such as paraffin wax, fuel oil, hexane, and plastic.

After AMOCO sold its shares to the Indian government in 1985, the government of India's (GOI) and NIOC's (National Iranian Oil Company) stakes were recalculated to be 84.62% and 15.38%, respectively. In 1988, a propylene plant with an annual production capacity of 170,000 metric tons was put into operation to meet the needs of nearby downstream companies. An agreement had been made between CPCL and Balmer Lawrie & Co. Ltd.

Anti-oxidants Feedstock was originally ordered from Chennai in September 1991, and deliveries began in March 1992. On May 19, 1992, the government of India sold off 16.92% of the company's paid-in capital to the Unit Trust of India, Indian mutual funds, Indian insurance companies, and Indian banks. The firm commissioned a 25,000-ton-per-year Hexane Plant and a 2.5-million-gallon-per-day sewage water treatment facility in 1992. The company's first facility, located in the Cauvery Basin near Nagapattinam, started operations in 1993 with a capacity of 0.5 MMTPA, and its size has since been increased to 1.0 MMTPA. Over 90,000 new shareholders joined CPCL when the company went public in 1994 at a premium of Rs. 70 (Rs. 90 to FIIs). CPCL installed a new 130 T/HR capacity cogeneration boiler to accommodate the higher stream load in 1995.

In 1996, the firm officially opened CBR's LPG separation plant and steam turbo generator. In 1997, CPCL introduced the 500N grade of LOBS to the market to both please consumers and kept up with demand. The government permitted the Company in 1997 to increase production at Manali by 3 million tons per year. The company's R&D division commissioned a reverse osmosis pilot plant in 1997 with a capacity of 50000 litres per day to evaluate the performance of the membranes as part of the indigenization of reverse osmosis membranes in conjunction with the Central salt and marine chemicals research institute. It was in 1997 that Petronas IOC and MRL discussed forming a joint venture to construct a cavernous underground storage facility at the Ennore liquefied natural gas import terminal.

In 1998, the business and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to cooperate on projects of mutual interest, one of which was a refinery project in Southern India. As early as 1999, the firm and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board entered a power purchase deal. In 2000, the business's joint venture with Chevron Chemical Company, US, Indian Additives Ltd, ceased to exist as a company subsidiary. CPCL introduced Crumb rubber-modified bitumen to construct high-quality and economically viable roads in the same year.

Starting on April 6, 2000, the company will be known as the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL). In 2000–01, Indian Oil purchased stock from the Government of India as part of the government's efforts to reorganize the oil industry in the country.
