In May 1964, BEML Limited (previously Bharat Earth Movers Limited) was founded as a public sector enterprise to produce mining equipment and rail coaches, and spare parts at its Bangalore Complex. The Government of India owns 54.03% of the company, which is listed on both exchanges (BSE and NSE). The remaining 44.97% is held by financial institutions, foreign institutional investors, banks, the general public, and employees.

Due to its wide business portfolio, the company has been able to grow from its small starting revenue of Rs. 5 Crore in 1965 to a turnover of more than Rs. 4300 Crore.
